Many people come to Balian for the surf, but as I have mentioned before there are other things to do here. Itís a great place to chill out even for the non-surfer who wants to get out of the hustle and bustle of Kuta.

Ok, back to the surf! Surfing in Balian is probably one of the most consistent places in Bali; itís always 2-3 ft bigger than in the south (Kuta & Bukit). Many people head up to Balian when the rest of Bali is flat like in Kuta or the Bukit. Its offers a right and left on the main peak, then there is also a very good inside left when the tide pushes in. On the other side of the river, there is another right-hander (Ketuts) that gets pretty good with some barrels on occasion.

The wave in Balian changes by the hour with the tides. It offers sections for experienced surfers as well as some areas for beginners. The ocean bottom is mainly rock but you will most likely never hit the bottom, but you do have to be cautious of where you enter and exit the ocean on the low tide. Like I tell many visitors surfing in Bali, if you are not familiar with a surf spot, then you should always ask someone with local knowledge about the break so that you have a fun and safe surf!

There are times when the Balian surf gets too big and messy, and thatís when you just head 25 minutes north up the road to Medewi which is a long left hand point break that can hold large swells. Medewi is a place that I prefer to visit just for the day, and Balian is where I would choose to stay as it has a great vibe!

In addition to the above breaks I mentioned, there are several other places nearby to catch a wave without any people. If you are adventurous, then you will have to find them on your own. We donít want to spoil every surf spot!

If you are interested in Kite surfing in Bali, then Balian could be the place for you. Over the past few years more and more people are discovering Balian as a Kite surfing destination. Ben Wilson who is one of the worlds top kite surfers puts on an advanced waved riding clinic in Balian every August. The winds vary from day to day, but generally speaking Balian surf in glassy in the morning and afternoons, and sometimes all day! If the wind permits kite surfing, then its usually between 1pm Ė 4pm. If you need a surfboard, there are a few places in Balian where you can rent one. If you need a surf lessons, we can also arrange that.
